15 poledník v J. Hradci

The „bests“ of Jindřichův Hradec or maybe you did not know …..

Do you know that Jindřichův Hradec is one of the smallest university towns in the Czech Republic? You did not know? Then you should know that the town above the Vajgar Pond hides many other surprises and unique features.

Narrow Gauge Railways in Jindřichův Hradec. For more than two centuries, twoshuttle trains inherently belong to the colouring of Jindřichův Hradec region. The track gauge is only 760 mm, but it is respectable 79 km long. Both of the tracks, Jindřichův Hradec – Nová Bystřice and Jindřichův Hradec – Obrataň, met their original purpose up to these days. But they are also an important technical monument and one of the most frequently visited tourist points of interest in
the region. Trip by one hundred years old steam engine to picturesque parts of Czech Canada – that is not only a unique trip to the past, but also an experience that you cannot miss.

Krýza´s Crib.  The citizen of Jindřichův Hradec and master stocking weaver Tomáš Krýza manufactured his unique crib for more than 60 years. The crib contains 1398 figures of people and animals, 133 of them being movable. In 1936, the Museum in Jindřichův Hradec obtained other two valuable cribs of Emanuel and Bohdan Steinocher, installed on both sides of Krýza´s crib. The whole unique unit is the largest folk mechanic crib in the world and it deserved to be entered to
the Guiness Book of Records. Fully legitimately, Krýza´s crib is considered to be the most popular exhibit in the collections of the Museum of Jindřichův Hradec region.

15th meridian. If the citizens of Jindřichův Hradec should really know an answer to some question, it would be that about exact time. It is because the 15th meridian goes through Jindřichův Hradec. The tourists can find its marks in the corner of the Church of Admission of Our Lady in the centre of the town. Thanks to this unique feature, the inhabitants of Jindřichův Hradec have absolutely exact Central European Time.

Vajgar Pond. History of one of the dominants of Jindřichův Hradec lasts for one thousand years, but the first preserved written record dates back to 1399. Vajgar was a natural part of town fortifications at that time. Nowadays, the pond is s typical representative of shallow water reservoir with high contents of nutritive substances. In the centre of the Vajgar Pond there is a small island that you cannot miss. It was built in 1860 by count Jaromír Černín for his wife Karolín. The pond is 49 ha big and it is divided into Large and Small Vajgar, being an integral part of the panorama of Jindřichův Hradec, shown in practically all and any promotion materials.

Ateliers of tapestries. Goblin workshops can be found between Nežárka River and one of two channels leading from Small Vajgar to that river, in the street Pod hradem, characterised by red sheet roof. The workshop was established in 1910 by Marie Teinitzerová as workshops for manufacture and renovation of tapestries. In 1954, the workshop moved to a newly repaired object in Pod hradem street. Now, the workshop can be found in Komenského street and it is possible to order a visit.

Legend of White Lady The castle and the palace in J.Hradec is tightly connected with the legend of the white lady. More popular is the version of Perchta from Rožmberk who – due to an oath declared by her husband – had to appear s a phantom in the manors of her ancestors. The public nearly do not know the legend of another White lady Markéta of Hardek. A nun from Krumlov arrived to Hradec in the white clothes of white nunmoths and according to the legend it was her who ordered distribution of sweet porridge to poor people. But anyway, it still remains a mystery which of the phantoms appears during the night holiday tours in the palace of Jindřichův Hradec.
