Provost Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

kostel nanebevzeti p marie

The 15th line of longitude runs through the courtyard of this church, whose 68.3m tall tower dominates the entire old part of Jindřichův Hradec.

The tower dates back to the 15th century and acquired its present appearance, similarly as most of the town’s architecture, after a devastating fire in 1801, in which 318 houses were burnt down and 30 lives were lost. In summer, the tower with a wonderful view of the town and its surroundings is accessible to the public. The originally Gothic church was built in the 2nd half of the 14th century; it was repaired 100 years later and expanded by the so-called Špulířská chapel with its interesting circular ribbed vault with figuratively decorated apex stones and sculpted animal decorations. During the great fire, only the stone baptismal font from 1525 and the remains of St. Hippolytus, the town’s patron, were preserved; the remains are now kept in a glass tomb under the tombstone of Jáchym of Hradec. This Renaissance tombstone is from 1565. Originally, a sarcophagus with a kneeling figure of the dead used to stand in front of the tombstone, but it was destroyed during the fire, as was the church’s most beautiful altar from red marble, donated by Františka of Meggau. The choir was established in 1483. The organ is modern, from the 1980’s.
