Museum of Jindřichův Hradec

The Museum, which resides in the Renaissance building of the former Jesuit Seminary, was established in Jindřichův Hradec already in 1882 and thus is one of the oldest regional museums in Bohemia. During its long existence, it has gathered a rich collection; and the public can view its significant archaeological findings, a very rare collection of Gothic carvings, documents of guild and craft production, part of the collection of paintings and furniture and a new exhibition of burgher and folk culture.

The exhibition of target weapons and the town’s sharpshooters’ association with an unusual collection of hand-painted sharp-shooting targets is also interesting; experts will appreciate the interesting exhibit of book culture. The Ema Destinová hall will certainly not escape the viewer’s attention; the exhibit is devoted to the most prominent Czech opera singer, who lived in her palace in nearby Stráž nad Nežárkou after ending her brilliant singing career at the New York Metropolitan Opera. The well-preserved interior of the former pharmacy called U Panny Marie Pomocné (At Virgin Mary, the Helper) from the end of the 18th century is also unique.

The foremost exhibit of the Museum of Jindřichův Hradec is undoubtedly the famous nativity scene by Tomáš Krýza, the largest mechanical folk nativity scene in the world, registered in the Guinness Book of Records. Exhibitions of fine arts, the museum’s collections and specialised exhibitions focused on regional history, ethnography, etc. are held in the former Chapel of St. Vitus, the newest part of the Museum from 1642.
