State Castle Landštejn

hrad landstejn

The castle was built at the beginning of the 13th century probably by the Moravian Přemyslovec dynasty as a territorial base on the boundaries of Bohemia, Moravia and Austria. Its concept of two towers connected by a palace presents a complex unique in its kind in Bohemia and is one of the three preserved Romanesque castles in our country and one of the most important Romanesque monuments in Central Europe. The upper part of the taller tower is reconstructed to serve as a lookout tower. A view of the deep forests of Czech Canada opens up to us from the tower. The exhibition presents the castle’s history, local archaeological findings and medieval weapons. Once the German poet Friedrich von Schiller took fancy to the massive castle walls and he situated the story of his highwaymen in the surrounding forests. In summer, the Landštejn festival is held here.
